چکیده

The problem of robust decoding of VLC encoded streams in presence of channel errors is essentially a problem of joint estimation and segmentation of the bit stream. A correct segmentation and estimation of a VLC compressed stream in presence of channel noise requires to re-augment the redundancy of the stream. Instead of using a channel code, the approach described here dedicates specifically extra bits to help the VLC decoder re-synchronization. The procedure amounts to extending symbols at known positions with a suffix. These suffixes can have an arbitrary length (depending on the degree of redundancy desired) and need not be recognized with probability close to 1. They serve as anchors to favor the likelihood of correctly synchronized sequences and penalize the others.

Joint Source-Channel Decoding of Variable-Length Codes with Soft Information: A Survey

Multimedia transmission over time-varying wireless channels presents a number of challenges beyond existing capabilities conceived so far for third-generation networks. Efficient quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia on these channels may in particular require a loosening and a rethinking of the layer separation principle. In that context, joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) str...

Joint source-channel turbo decoding of VLC-coded Markov sources

We analyse the dependencies between the variables involved in the source and channel coding chain. This chain is composed of 1/ a Markov source of symbols, followed by 2/ a variable length source coder, and 3/ a channel coder. The output process is analysed in the framework of Bayesian networks, which provide both an intuitive representation of the structure of dependencies, and a way of derivi...

Progressive and Error-Resilient Transmission Strategies for VLC Encoded Signals over Noisy Channels

This paper addresses the issue of robust and progressive transmission of signals (e.g., images, video) encoded with variable length codes (VLCs) over error-prone channels. This paper first describes bitstream construction methods offering good properties in terms of error resilience and progressivity. In contrast with related algorithms described in the literature, all proposed methods have a l...

Resynchronizing Variable-Length Codes for Robust Image Transmission

Transmission errors can cause catastrophic decoding errors when data has been encoded with a variable length code (VLC). Channel coding can alleviate this problem at the expense of a higher data rate. In the case of image data, for a fixed data rate the image quality degrades substantially when error correcting coding is introduced. A substantial improvement in the transmitted image quality is ...

On the joint source-channel decoding of variable-length encoded sources: the additive-Markov case

We propose an optimal joint source-channel maximum a posteriori probability decoder for variable-length encoded sources transmitted over a wireless channel, modeled as an additive-Markov channel. The state space introduced by the authors in a previous paper is used to take care of the unique challenges posed by variable-length codes. Simulations demonstrate that this decoder performs substantia...
